Tha Agave Landscape

The Agave Landscape and Ancient Industrial Facilities of Tequila are the first Mexican assets to be incorporated into the category of Cultural Landscapes of UNESCO’S list of World Heritage Sites.

These were nominated as such because they are an exceptional testimony to the harmonious and sustainable adaptation of use of the soil on a natural environment: fusing together the European distillation techniques with the pre-hispanic tradition of fermentation of agave plant.

During the tour through the municipalities of El Arenal, Amatitán, Tequila (in the Tequila Valley) Magdalena and Teuchitlán, the traveler will be able to admire vast extensions of farmland of blue agave, the plant used since the XVI century to elaborate tequila and for at least two thousand years, to elaborate fermented beverages and manufacture clothes due to its textile fibers, which attributes the region unique identity and landscape characteristics.

Agaves

In addition to the agave fields, registration includes distilleries, factories (active or abandoned), taverns, cities and archaeological remains of the Teuchitlán culture (year 200 to 900 B.C.); the landscape, housing, temples, funerary tumulus, people at work, agave fields, distilleries, factories that are active or abandoned, taverns, drinkers, cities, residents, visitors, culture and destination. This and more patiently awaits the arrival of travelers. Is it the agave that shapes the culture that makes up the landscape or is it the culture that shapes the plant? And is the tequila produced to carve a landscape?

What is true is that the agave culture is considered an intrinsic element of the national Mexican identity and it is said that it’s pure mixing, that it’s production comprises the pre-hispanic motives of fermentation and observation. It’s a true privilege to walk through this beautiful landscape, through its noble and generous land, tended for by the “Jimadores” (laborers), working from dawn to dusk in the 34,658 hectares, which are divided in a core zone located between the valleys of Tequila and Amatitán, through Arenal; the Guachimontones zone and a buffer zone located on the canyon of the ravine of Río Grande de Santiago. The Agave Landscape and Ancient Industrial Facilities of Tequila are the perfect setting for you to live an experience that you will never forget.
